Middle East in Sweden

New Swedes of Middle Eastern ancestry are extremely diverse in regard to national/
ethnic origins, languages, religious affi liations and non-affi liations, class backgrounds and residential locations. The histories of this diverse group are inextricably linked toglobal migration dynamics occurring across the European continent. Through qualitative and quantitative approaches, especially methods that facilitate reciprocity among researchers and respondents, scholars in this domain explore and analyze the dimensions of this diversity. Research in this domain is multi-disciplinary. Current research foci include scholarly examinations of the discrepancies among popular media-based representations of Middle Eastern immigrants and the diverse realities of persons of Middle Eastern backgrounds living in Sweden. Future research directions include plansor a mixed-methods project involving qualitative interviews, quantitative surveys, and GIS network analyses to explore the role of civil society on the acquisition of social resources like quality jobs and health care.
