The goal of this research domain is to contribute to our knowledge of the important roles women in the MENA region play in the social, economic and political developments of their societies. Taking women leadership as a starting point, our current research investigates the role of women leaders in the Gulf Cooperation Council in social and cultural transformations in their societies. Specifically, new research for Women for Sustainable Growth looks into the nature of women’s networking activities and the extent to which these networks are utilized to address gender specific concerns; the relationship between women’s economic activity and political mobilization; and cultural and religious resources that inform women’s public activities. These general areas need to be developed theoretically and empirically using interdisciplinary approaches, participatory strategies and mixed methods. Specific case studies are significant in providing initial understandings of some of these areas, but we also pursue comparative analyses for a more comprehensive understanding of the public activities of women and their relationship to social development. In our various activities, we encourage the participation of individuals from academia, the business community, the public sector, and community organizations.
