The program in 2013-14 provides an opportunity for two young scholars who want to pursue their research in conjunction with an ongoing research project at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES). The young scholars should undertake serious academic writing and present their research plans or tentative findings to colleagues working at Lund University. In order to link applications to research at CMES and for more information about the Strategic Research Area – The Middle East in the Contemporary World (MECW), see www.cmes.lu.se. We especially encourage students who have finished their master thesis to apply. The aim would be to write a scholarly article.
CMES will cover travel and accommodation costs and provide academic, technical and administrative support for a period of three months. We have two periods during 2013-14: October – December 2013 or January – March 2014 (longer periods of self-financed stays may be considered).
Applicants should submit a cover letter that specifies which period they would like to stay in Lund, their CV, and a description (1500 words) of their research project. A letter of recommendation from the young scholar’s academic advisor should accompany the application.
CMES will provide each Visiting Young Scholar with an academic mentor to make the visit both pleasant and productive. Young Visiting Scholars are expected to:
1. To make an introductory presentation of their research project at an early stage of the visit to Lund;
2. To actively participate in the academic activities of the Center;
3. At the end of their visit to hold a seminar presenting their results of their research at the Center.
Applications should be sent to:

In an effort to promote scholarly research and writing on the contemporary Middle Eastern and Islamic societies, the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Lund University hosts a limited number of visiting researchers each year. We welcome applicants from various disciplines and with a wide range of interests that correspond to our research domains within the Middle East in the Contemporary World. We expect visiting researchers to contribute to our dynamic research environment by working collaboratively with our scholars, participating in Center’s events and delivering, at least, one public presentation on the work conducted during their stay. The Center will provide visiting researchers with access to Lund University’s libraries and facilities, office space, computer access, and a vibrant collegiate environment. CMES accepts applications for individuals who are faculty members at the college or university level, at the postdoctoral level (within three years or less of receiving their PhD), or doctoral candidates at the dissertation stage. Please note that CMES visiting researchers are unpaid.
Individuals may hold visiting researcher positions for a minimum of three months and a maximum of two years. A complete Visiting Researcher application includes:
