Leif Stenberg

Director, Professor in Islamic Studies

In 2007 Stenberg was appointed Director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Lund University. Stenberg's main research interest concerns contemporary interpretations of Islam in Sufism, among Muslims in Europe, Islamism and within the discussion on the relationship between Islam and modern science. In October 2011, he was appointed Professor in Islamic Studies at Lund University.

Leif received a Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from Lund University, Sweden in 1996 with the publication of his award winning thesis The Islamization of Science: Four Muslim Positions Developing an Islamic Modernity. In 1997 until 1999 he was a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University. The following year, 1999-2000, Stenberg was a visiting scholar at the Institut Français d’Études Arabes de Damas (IFEAD) in Damascus, Syria. He has worked at Uppsala and Växjö universities, but since 2001 he has held a position at Lund University in Islamology and became an Associate Professor in 2003 and in 2011 Stenberg was appointed professor at Lund University.
