CMES researcher Lina Eklund has been elected as a new member of the Young Academy of Sweden, a multidisciplinary academy bringing together outstanding early-career researchers.

The Young Academy of Sweden is an independent organisation that selects leading young researchers from across disciplines, with the aim of contributing to public debate and strengthening the conditions for research.

Lina Eklund is an associate professor in geobiosphere science at Lund University and a researcher at the Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies (CMES). Her research focuses on the relationships between environmental change, armed conflict, and migration, with a particular emphasis on the Middle East.

By combining satellite data with methods such as interviews and surveys, she examines how landscapes in conflict areas are transformed and what these changes mean for local communities and peacebuilding efforts.

In this year’s intake, nine new members were elected, representing a wide range of research fields. Membership lasts for five years and involves engaging in initiatives that address key issues for research and society.
