A Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) seminar on 8 September marked the launch of Three Scandinavian Missionary Women and the Armenian Genocide, a new book edited by Svante Lundgren and Maria Småberg that sheds light on the humanitarian work of three Scandinavian women who assisted Armenians during one of the twentieth century's most devastating atrocities.

In the  opening remarks, CMES Director Ronny Berndtsson emphasised the significance of the publication and the Centre's pride in supporting the project. He highlighted the importance of individual actions and noted that the book contributes to a deeper understanding of both the Armenian Genocide and the long-standing historical connections between Scandinavia and the Middle East.

Drawing on eyewitness accounts and first-hand testimonies, the volume places women, religion and transnational networks at the centre of humanitarian history. It also offers new perspectives on Nordic humanitarian engagement and explores how historical understanding can foster a broader sense of responsibility towards others.
