CMES Research Seminar: Preventing Extremism and Terrorism in Jordan (ZOOM ONLY)
Presentation by Ann-Kristin Jonasson, Department of Political Science, University of Gothenburg.
PLEASE NOTE: This seminar will take place on 20 April.
Based on her earlier research, Ann-Kristin presently focuses on how violent extremism is fought in Jordan. How much is this fight based on security policy-approaches and social policy-approaches respectively? In the literature, it is repeatedly pointed out that a balance between these approaches is needed to succeed in the fight on violent extremism. Based on interviews in Jordan, the preliminary findings show that security policy approaches are heavily focused to fight violent extremism. The paper discusses how these findings should be related to. What are the logics of – and problems with – this approach? This is discussed in the study, along with why there are reasons to be wary of such an approach and what would be needed to better take on the challenge of violent extremism.
Ann-Kristin Jonasson is a senior lecturer at the Department of Political Science, University of Gothenburg. Her research has mainly focused on the EU's democracy promotion, and how this relates to the prevention of violent extremism and terrorism, in the Mediterranean region, with a particular focus on Jordan and Turkey. She has also studied Islamist parties and democratic processes in these countries. Currently, Ann-Kristin is interested in how violent extremism is fought in Jordan and she is developing a research project on how civic education is used to counter violent extremism.
