CMES Research Seminar: The Role of Social Media in Cultural Citizenship - Young Women in the United Arab Emirates
Presentation by Leysan Storie, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Strategic Communication and CMES Researcher.
The United Arab Emirates government has, in the last decade, made efforts to provide opportunities for women to fully participate in societal life. The country provided all women to get free higher education. In the government, several women were appointed as ministers. In 2018, a law was passed to secure equal salaries for men and women. However, there are still avenues in the UAE where women’s participation is controversial. As such, engagement and active sharing of Emirati women’s personal images on social media may not be seen positively. This study uses the cultural citizenship framework to explore the role of social media in women’s feeling of belonging to their society. Focus groups were conducted with young Emirati women living in the United Arab Emirates, a country where several female politicians started to openly engage on social media. Data reflected young women’s perceptions about Emirati women’s rights and responsibilities on social media. Guided by the concept of cultural citizenship and gender media studies, this research offers theoretical as well as practical implications related to social media’s role in cultural citizenship.
