Dr. Simon Stjernholm will present research findings and perspectives on the late Turkish Cypriot Naqshbandi Sufi Shaykh Muhammad Nazim Adil al-Haqqani, leader of the transnational Sufi movement Naqshbandi-Haqqani until his death in May 2014.

About Spyros' talk: Drawing on extensive research on its brief career (its emergence, evolution, organizational and recruitment structures, domestic and international discourse and practices) and with the aid of visual material from the territories it holds, this paper will try to address the phenomenon of the Islamic State. What is and what is not the Islamic State, how has it managed to become a reality on the ground and a household name throughout the world, how does it control its territories and populations, how is everyday life organized in its Syrian and Iraqi 'provinces'.
