This week at CMES we have our first public lecture of 2019 with Nazanin Shahrokni, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Syracuse University and Visiting Researcher at CMES, entitled "Women in Place: The State and the Politics of Gender Segregation in Iran" (follow link for Facebook event). Nazanin will present her forthcoming book which offers a gripping inquiry into gender segregation policies and women’s rights in contemporary Iran. The talk will take place at 12pm, Room 129, Eden Building, Paradisgatan 5H.
On the 6th and 7th, a workshop on the financialisation of housing and the violation of housing rights in the global north and south will be held at the Department of Human Geography. The workshop was organised by Ozlem Celik, and sponsored by the Swedish Institute, The Department of Human Geography, and CMES.
Last week at CMES (28th January - 1st February)
On the 31st January, visiting Researcher Philip Proudfoot (anthropology, University of Bath, UK, and Centre for Middle Eastern Studies, Lund University, Sweden) and Mahdi Zaidan (independent researcher and activist, Beirut, Lebanon) presented a paper in a EuroStorie research seminar organised by the Centre of Excellence in Law, Identity and the European Narratives at the University of Helsinki.
Titled "Against abandonment: activist and humanitarian responses to LGBT refugees in Athens and Beirut", the paper is based on their ongoing research, funded by the British Academy.
