The Aesthetics, Ethics & Creativity of Swedish Muslim Art Creators

Project leader: Anders Ackfeldt Funding: MECW 2021–2025

Throughout the history of Islam, Muslim theologians have linked artistic creativity and aesthetics with religious ethics. Competing Islamic theologies have set the framework for and contributed to the development of various art expressions.

The Aesthetics, Ethics & Creativity of Swedish Muslim Art Creators

These processes are well described by both art historians and historians of religion. On the other hand, few have analyzed the art creators’ own perceptions of religion and art. This project aims to highlight and critically analyze Swedish Muslim art creators and their art production based on three dimensions: aesthetics, ethics and creativity.

Methodologically this project is based on interviews, field work and analyzing music, books, poems and other works of art.

Theoretically the projekt draws on social semiotics.
