Purnendu Sardar
Postdoctoral fellow

Purnendu is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (MGeo) and the Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies (CMES). His research focuses on analyzing vegetation and land‑use changes in the Middle East using remote sensing techniques. He is also a member of BECC (Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in a Changing Climate) at Lund University.
He is currently part of the ECO‑Syria Project at CMES and contributes to the CMES Middle East Data Infrastructure Lab. Purnendu holds a PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dhanbad, where he studied the impacts of climate change on the mangrove ecosystems of the Sundarbans.
Following his PhD, Purnendu worked in the climate‑tech, climate-action industry, leading a team of geospatial experts to implement large‑scale agroforestry projects in India and Kenya. Additionally, he has served as a geospatial consultant for several international companies. His broader research interests include understanding conflicts, land‑use dynamics, and ecological processes at the landscape level using geospatial tools.
