Swedish Encounters with Black American Islam and the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960´s

Project leader: Anders Ackfeldt

This project takes an interest in a largely ignored and under studied part of Swedish history. It seeks to primarily map out Swedish encounters with Black American Islam and also the larger American Civil Rights Movement in the radical political climate in Sweden during the 1960´s.

It seeks to discuss media reporting as well as books that took an interest in the Black American experience.

The project also takes an interest in ways that Black Islam and the larger Civil Rights Movements was depicted, interpreted and discussed by Swedish Art creators and public intellectuals like for example Beppe Wolgers and Olof Lagercrantz.

The project mainly draws on archival research.
