Svante has a doctorate in Jewish Studies from Åbo Akademi University, Finland. He has previously worked as a teacher at a secondary school and as a researcher and lecturer at Åbo Akademi University. For two years (2012-13) he was a researcher at the Center for Theology and Religious Studies at Lund University, before working for the Assyrian Federation of Sweden.
At CMES Svante's research focuses on the non-Muslim minorities of the Middle East, especially Assyrians, Armenians and Yazidis. Other research interests are the Armenian genocide, and Western missionary and humanitarian work among the Ottoman Armenians.
