Muhammad ‘Abduh - Modern Islam and the Culture of Ambiguity (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2022)

How to approach the complex intellectual legacy of a modern Muslim thinker like Muhammad 'Abduh (1849-1905)? This book offers an answer to this question by providing a new complete intellectual biography of him. It delineates 'Abduh's formation as a reformer and activist and embeds his varied intellectual contributions in a culture of ambiguity which has marked the intellectual life of Muslim societies throughout their history.

By using new sources – in particular his early mystical, philosophical and political writings – and including recent academic contributions on him, the book explores 'Abduh's complex intellectual formation, the various religious, philosophical and cultural influences that shaped him, and his changing attitudes towards “Western modernity” and its colonial manifestation in the 19th century. Oliver Scharbrodt challenges the perception in academic scholarship - and among Muslim reformers of the 20th century - that searched for intellectual coherence and biographical consistency in 'Abduh's life. Instead, this book offers a new more comprehensive reading of his intellectual legacy and highlights the variety of approaches and ideas manifest in his contributions.

لأن محمد عبده (1849- 1905م) مع كونه من أكثر الشخصيات بحثًا في الفكر الإسلامي الحديث. إلا أن جُل الدراسات حوله تركِّز على الإنتاج الفكري المنتج قَرابة نهاية حياته وتتجاهل أعماله السابقة. رغم ذلك، توضح المخرجات السابقة انخراطه المركب مع مجموعة متنوعة من التقاليد الفكرية الإسلامية، وتوفِّر فوارق دقيقة ووجهات نظر متباينة لعمله الإصلاحي. يوسع هذا الكتاب فهمنا لعمل عبده الفكري من خلال تضمينه في «ثقافة الالتباس» (culture of ambiguity) للإسلام. بقيامه بذلك يعالج هذا الكتاب سؤال «لماذا يبدو إرث عبده الفكري متناقضًا وغير متَّسق وملتبس؟». كما أن القيام بدراسة النسب الفكري لأفكاره يبتعد عن نهج شائع في الدراسات الأكاديمية يقيس نجاح الإصلاحيين المسلمين المعاصرين من خلال مدى تشكيل أفكارهم وتأثيرها وتوافُقِها مع نماذج الحداثة الغربية. يبتعد هذا الكتاب عن مثل هذا المنهاج، وبالتالي فهو يشارك في المساهمات الحديثة في الدراسات الإسلامية التي تسلِّط الضوء على ثقافة الالتباس الفكرية السائدة عبر التاريخ الإسلامي. توفر ثقافة الالتباس هذه منظورًا مميزًا على مساعي عبده الإصلاحية وتدعونا إلى التخلِّي عن بعض المفاهيم المسبقة حول «الأرثذوكسية» (الأصولية المستقيمة) و«الهرقطة» (الابتداع) في الإسلام، أو التمييز البادي بين الدين و«العلماني». وعليه، فإن هذا الكتاب يقدم مساهمة أوسع لكيفية تناول التاريخ الفكري للإسلام الحديث ونسبه في الفكر الإسلامي ما قبل الحديث

Biographical Note

Oliver Scharbrodt is Professor of Islamic Studies. He has published on the intellectual history of modern Islam, Sufism, Twelver Shiism and Muslim minorities in Europe in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, Die Welt des Islams, the British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations, Contemporary Islam and the Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs. He is the author of Islam and the Baha’i Faith: A Comparative Study of Muhammad ‘Abduh and ‘Abdul-Baha ‘Abbas (London: Routledge, 2008) and co-authored Muslims in Ireland: Past and Present (Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 2015). Together with Yafa Shanneik he co-edited the volume Shi’a Minorities in the Contemporary World: Migration, Transnationalism and Multilocality (Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 2020). He was editor-in-chief of the Yearbook of Muslims in Europe (Leiden: Brill) from 2015 until 2020. His latest book Muhammad ‘Abduh: Modern Islam and the Culture of Ambiguity (London: IB Tauris, 2022) illustrates ‘Abduh’s complex engagement with Islam’s diverse intellectual traditions in his reformist discourse. From 2018 until 2023, he served the principal investigator of the project “Creating an alternative umma: clerical authority and religio-political mobilisation in transnational Shii Islam” which was funded by a Consolidator Grant of the European Research Council (grant agreement no. 724557).
