Presentation by Martin Hvidt (University of Southern Denmark): "Growth perspectives for the Arab Gulf countries - Exploring the link between diversification, the knowledge economy and green transition".

Abstract

Economic growth in the Gulf states is challenged by the World’s transition away from ‘black’ energy forms. This presentation will discuss future scenarios for income generation by exploring the link between diversification, the knowledge economy and green transition.

The UAE’s space missions an not least the futuristic city of NEOM in Saudi Arabia are set to play a vital role in preparing these economies for the future by emphasizing the traits of the 4th Industrial Revolution: knowledge creation, entrepreneurship, risk-taking, and experimentation.

So is the recent strategy of redirecting the energy sector away from the production of oil and gas to become the key supplier of green hydrogen to the World. The region certainly have comparative advantages to do so, but there are numerous challenges to be met before hydrogen become the new ‘black gold.’ These and other issues will discussed during the presentation.

Biographical Note

Dr. Martin Hvidt is associate professor at the Center for Contemporary Middle East Studies, University of Southern Denmark and former full professor at Zayed University, UAE (2013-2016). He received his PhD degree from Odense University in 1995 and was in 2019 bestowed the prestigious Dr. phil degree by University of Southern Denmark based on a Higher Doctoral dissertation titled “Social and Economic Development in the Contemporary Arab Gulf States. His research focuses on the economic and social development of the Arab Gulf countries, mainly during the past 50 years, encompassing development models, diversification, knowledge economy and societal planning.
