The workshop was convened by Sami Al-Daghistani (Associate Professor, Lund University) and it brought together international experts in the field, including Kecia Ali (Boston University), Junaid Quadri (University of Illinois at Chicago), Humeira Iqtidar (King’s College London), Rachel Woodlock (University of Melbourne), Lena Salaymeh (École Pratique des Hautes Études, Paris), Oliver Scharbrodt (Lund University), and Salah Chafik (online, Doha Institute for Graduate Studies).
The workshop resulted in
- Critical evolution of the history and role of Islamic studies in society and academia
- Sustained discussion about the need for decolonial approaches, methods, and epistemologies across multiple disciplines and departments
- Publication plan for a special issue/edited volume in a top-ranking journal
- Follow-up meeting in 2027 to workshop participants’ papers
