In 2016, Sherin Mariam opened the Mosque in Copenhagen, one of the first mosques in Europe led by women. They struggle for a reading of the Quran marked by tolerance, equality and Islamic feminism.
The film has attracted a lot of attention and started this year's Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival, one of the largest documentary film festivals in the world. We follow Sherin Khankan's struggle to drive change while there are contradictions within the Mosque members. Should one go slowly or stand on the barricades?
The film is made by Marie Skovgaard, who for four years followed Sherin Khankan's work for the rights of Muslim women, including the right to divorce and inter-religious marriage. The film is a piece of important contemporary history.
The film is in Danish and subtitled in English.
After the film follows a conversation about research on Islamic feminism with Jesper Petersen, doctoral student in Islamology at Lund University, and Pernille Friis Jensen, doctoral student in religious sociology at Copenhagen University.
