Middle East Forum Newsletter #1 May, 2019

The Middle East is an area that affects us all. It is the cradle of human civilization with a recent conflict-ridden history, and aspiring democracy movements that are of global concern. Its immense strategic importance and strong role in the world economy, together with an unprecedented population increase, contain all ingredients for important academic research and education dedicated to understanding, explaining, and improving our world and human conditions.

The Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) was established in 2007. It hosts the Strategic Research Area entitled Middle East in the Contemporary World (MECW). At present, CMES is a part of the Faculty of Social Sciences but maintains strong ambitions to perform transdisciplinary cutting-edge research.

With the objective to provide an overview Middle Eastern studies undertaken at Lund University, this newsletter is intended to give bi-monthly updates on research, events, and other related news. It is also intended to form a window towards the society, showcasing important Middle Eastern research conducted at Lund University.

With the above as a general introduction, we hope that you will enjoy reading this newsletter
