Jayne Svenungsson is Professor of Systematic Theology. Her main areas of research are political theology and philosophy of history. Throughout her career, she has published extensively on topics ranging from memory politics, the concept of secularization, and the pervasiveness of anti-Jewish stereotypes in Christian theology and Western historiography. During her years at the CMES, she will be part of the project Beyond Sacred/Secular Cities. To the project, she will contribute theoretical expertise on the discursive mechanisms involved in drawing boundaries between the ‘religious’ and ‘secular’. In particular, she will bring attention to the ways in which discourses on the secular have been shaped by liberal narratives of progress that carry an array of assumptions about human nature, agency and power.
