The well-attended CMES panel in Almedalen on gender-just peace in the Middle East is now available on YouTube (in Swedish)!

Gender-Just Peace in the Middle East - Is It Possible? (Jämställd fred i Mellanöstern – är det möjligt?)

July 6, 2022, 13:45-14:45, Hästgatan 13 in Visby

How is the UN's Women, Peace and Security agenda implemented in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA)? What is needed for meaningful implementation? And what obstacles are there for women's participation in MENA peacebuilding? How are feminist women's movements working to build gender-just peace?

In this seminar, several MENA experts will discuss possibilities for and obstacles to building gender-just peace in the region. The participants will contribute with perspectives from contemporary research, diplomacy and activism. Women's participation in peace negotiations will be discussed, as well as the growing women's movement in the region since the 2011 Arab Spring. Despite some progress, women's participation continues to be opposed and gender equality issues are continuously marginalised in peace processes. What will it take to build a gender-just peace in MENA?
